Investigators say the body found in a vineyard east of Calistoga on Tuesday is too badly decomposed to identify easily.

Napa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tracey Stuart said Wednesday that the body is clearly not that of a child. But beyond that it is hard to say any more without expert examination, which will begin now that investigators are finished with the scene. Investigators said it is not even clear whether the body is that of a man or a woman.

The body was found by a vineyard worker at the Kenefick Ranch on Tuesday near a creek that runs through the sprawling property at the base of the Palisades, just outside the city line.

Stuart said the person has been dead for a long time, but investigators have not determined how long. Nor have they determined how long the body had been in the vineyard and how it got there.

The site is along an isolated access road that has no gate, so it is possible to access it from Silverado Trail. The creek also runs down from a rugged partially forested hillside, though Stuart said investigators have not determined whether the body might have washed down from somewhere in the hills during recent heavy rains. She called reported comments to that effect “someone’s speculation.”

Anyone with information on the remains may call the Sheriff’s Office at 253-4509.
