One acre was burned in Calistoga on Sunday afternoon after a 91-year-old woman allegedly crashed her 1995 Cadillac DeVille into two power poles, causing wires to fall, the California Highway Patrol said.
Just before 4 p.m., Pauline Manning was heading west on Highway 128, west of Bennett Lane, when an eastbound driver allegedly crossed into her lane of traffic, causing her to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid being hit, she told the CHP. That’s when she reportedly crashed into two power poles, then came to rest upon hitting a fence.
Someone driving ahead of her saw the wreck in their rear-view mirror, turned around and cautioned the uninjured Manning to stay in the vehicle because of the downed power lines until authorities arrived, the CHP said.
The lines closed the highway for about 35 minutes and ignited a fire that burned 1 acre, authorities said.
