SANTA ROSA -- Attorneys are giving their closing arguments Thursday at the Sonoma County Superior Court trial of a man charged with attempted murder and an armored car robbery in Windsor last year.

Ivan Morales, 25, of Lakeport, is charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault, shooting at an occupied vehicle and vehicle theft in connection with the shooting and robbery of an armored car guard in Windsor on July 12, 2016.

Morales' co-defendant, Sergey Gutsu, 25, of Antelope, pleaded no contest Monday to the same felony charges. He faces 51 years and four months to life in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 25, according to the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.

Both defendants fled Windsor in a Chevrolet Suburban to Calistoga where Gutsu shot at Calistoga police officer Luis Paniagua, who crashed his patrol car into the Chevrolet, prosecutors said.

Gutsu was arrested and Morales fled but was found hiding in a bushy culvert.

The defendants were tried before separate juries. Morales' attorney Jenny Andrews told her client's jury that Gutsu shot both the armored car guard and Paniagua, while Gutsu told Sonoma County sheriff's deputies that Morales shot the guard.
