Someone stole a payment check placed in a mailbox in the 2110 block of West Lincoln Avenue sometime between 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to the family and police.

On Wednesday, a walker found the opened envelope on the ground 1 1/2 blocks from the house and brought it back to the owner, Jim Hunter. Hunter said the envelope contained the payment stub for his pickup truck, but the check had been removed.

His family had to close the bank account, open a new one and set up new automated deposits, Hunter said.

He and his wife, Linda, are grateful for the female walker for bringing the matter to their attention in a timely manner. “We’re lucky,” Linda Hunter said.

Napa police Capt. Jeff Troendly on Thursday said the incident remains under investigation.

I make it a practice to NEVER put outgoing mail in my mail box. I deliver it to the PO or to one of the few walk-up/drive-up USPS boxes around town.
So many low-life folks around, one really has to be careful.
