A man suffered major injuries after either falling or jumping 54 feet from the southern side of Maxwell Bridge at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Napa Fire and Police departments.

The man, who was not identified, landed in a grassy area 80 feet from the Napa River, authorities said. He was conscious but had visible injuries, Police Sgt. Amy Hunter said.

The man apparently was walking alone prior to the incident, authorities said. Napa Police Lt. Debbie Peecook said the incident is being investigated as an attempted suicide.

A witness, Jesse Allured of Napa, said he saw the man standing outside the railings of the bridge before he apparently jumped.

The man was transported by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Napa Fire Capt. Roger Reichenberg said. Peecook said he was then flown by helicopter in critical condition to another hospital.

The outpouring of concern for the injured man and compassion for his family that you all have shown is amazing. (Sarcasm intended.)

Amen SouthNapa. Don't blame the bridge for people choosing to jump from it. And please don't waste taxpayer dollars to study safety improvements or nets to prevent the few who will find someway to end their tortured soul. The funding would be better suited to try and help these people, which is another topic of discussion.

I just hope whomever it was that fell/jumped is able to find that needed help.

It should have been named after the man who died while working on it.......That was sad.

Chit Chat

Has the victim been identified? If not, why not?

@dirty napkin and napablogger - the new bridge was given the same name as the bridge it replaced - Maxwell Bridge - at a dedication ceremony in June 2006.

You are very correct "SouthNapa" President Kennedy spoke of his own assassination hours before that fateful motorcade through Dallas, He said "If anyone wanted to shoot the president, all they would have to do is get on a high story building with a rifle, and no one could prevent it." Just 2 hours later he was cut down by assassin's bullets.

Mesh might not help, but it possibly could discourage someone who wanted to take their own precious life. Life is good and everyone has the God given right to live and they shouldn't take their own or another's. My implication was simply put a stop to it now before it goes to far in the future.

People that want to commit suicide will find a way to do so. Leave the bridge the way it is.
