A former employee of Treasury Wine Estates was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of embezzlement, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

The winery contacted the Sheriff’s Office in March to report that its former employee, John Robert Ruiz, 35, of Napa had sold the company’s used barrel racks to a business in Oroville, Capt. Keith Behlmer said. Ruiz, who was working as the cellar manager at Stag’s Leap at the time, had been assigned to replace the barrel racks, Behlmer said.

Ruiz received $175,000 in checks and wire transfer into his personal account prior to leaving his job at Treasury Wine Estates without disclosing that he had received funds from the sale or giving the any of the money to the company.

Ruiz surrendered to a warrant out for his arrest and was booked at the Napa County jail on Tuesday.
