Justin-Siena High School student Delia Bisconer recently won the countywide Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest. Napa High student Aubrey May placed second.
The competition was part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
On Feb. 11, 10 high school students from Napa County participated in the Poetry Out Loud school contest at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa.
Bisconer, who was awarded $200, will advance to the California State contest held in Sacramento next month. The state champion will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for the national championship in April.
Other participants included Anais Gonzalez, Justin-Siena High; Emma Harrington, New Tech High; Elizabeth Kellogg, St. Helena High; Enya Payan, St. Helena High; Lily Pearson, American Canyon High; Emma Self, New Tech High; Corinne Tsai, Napa High; and Alex Yu, American Canyon High.
In 2015, Poetry Out Loud celebrates its 10th anniversary, reaching nearly 2.5 million students at more than 7,300 schools nationwide. It is presented with Arts Council Napa Valley, California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation.
