Napa police arrested a 47-year-old man after he allegedly threw suspected contraband into the Napa River, then fought with officers, authorities said.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a disturbance under the First Street Bridge, police said.

The suspect, Randall Kelly Kilgore, was allegedly uncooperative with police and threw suspected contraband into the river, police said. The fire department responded and unsuccessfully tried to recover the possible evidence.

Evidence of drug use was allegedly located at the scene and Kilgore allegedly displayed signs of being under the influence, police said.

As officers tried to arrest the man, a struggle allegedly ensued and police used pepper spray to subdue the suspect, authorities said. After Kilgore was cleared by Queen of the Valley Medical Center, he was booked into the Napa jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, being under the influence of a controlled substance, destroying evidence and littering.
