A Fairfield husband and wife were arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of stealing $615 of merchandise from the American Canyon Walmart, according to authorities.

At 3:28 p.m., American Canyon police received reports of the theft and of a black Volkswagen leaving the parking lot shortly afterward, according to Sgt. Jon Crawford of the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

An officer stopped the Volkswagen in the eastbound lane of Jameson Canyon Road and detained two of the four occupants, identified by Crawford as Augustus Whitfield, 60, and Wyoma Whitfield, 45.

Inside the Walmart, the couple had placed two plastic tote containers, packaged snacks, dish soap, a $228 32-inch flat-screen television and $344 worth of fresh meat into a shopping cart, then left the store and loaded the goods into the car, Crawford said.

The Volkswagen’s driver and another passenger claimed no connection to the alleged thefts and were released, according to Crawford.

Wyoma and Augustus Whitfield, whose first name was listed as Augustin in jail records, were held on suspicion of burglary and criminal conspiracy. They were booked into the Napa County jail.
