A pedestrian was killed at about 2:55 p.m. Thursday west of Sonoma when a driver from Napa allegedly hit him as he walked in a bike lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Thornton Bunch Jr., 74, of Napa, was driving a 2004 Toyota Prius, northbound on Arnold Drive near Grove Street when, for reasons still under investigation, he drifted into the bike lane and struck the pedestrian, the CHP said.

The pedestrian, Pedro Hernandez, 32, of Sonoma, was walking northbound on Arnold Drive, CHP Officer Garrett Ray said.  He was pronounced dead at the scene, Ray said.

Bunch was not arrested. The crash remains under investigation.

Just for the record, It is always good when walking on the roads to be facing the traffic rather than having your back to them. I went up a road the other day, and almost got clipped myself by unsafe drivers. So after that, I face the traffic. it's a good lesson to learn.

Very well said. It was my second thought.

My heart goes out to everyone involved.

If that Toyota was running off the batteries I doubt the victim even heard it coming…...all battery cars are nasty when riding a bike on a rural road...of course when they run off the batteries not the engine.
