The Napa Police Department is warning residents of an alleged telephone scam involving false claims of money awards.

A Napa woman on Monday received a call from outside the county from a man who claimed to have $700 waiting for her, the department said in a statement. The caller, whom police described as speaking with a foreign accent, reportedly asked the woman her checking account number, claiming she would receive a direct deposit.
