ELK GROVE — Giant pumpkins from Napa residents won top prizes Saturday at the 19th annual Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival.

Tim Mathison of Napa took first place with a 1,874.5-pound pumpkin, a new California record. Mathison bested a strong contender from Washington state, who ended in second place. Mathison won more than $11,200 for his efforts.

Other Napans at the festival included Gary Miller, who brought a 1,659-pound pumpkin and took third place; Jose Cardenas, who showed a pumpkin that weighed 1,655.5 pounds and took fourth place; and Jose Ceja, who grew a 1,599-pound pumpkin and finished in fifth place.

Pete and Cindi Glasier took sixth place with a 1,534.5-pound pumpkin, while Ruben Frias’ 1,383.5-pound pumpkin came in eighth place.

The smallest pumpkin that entered the contest weighed 4.2 pounds.
