Someone claiming to be a Microsoft technical support employee has been calling residents to steal credit card information, according to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

At least two Napa County Sheriff’s Office employees and a Napa County resident were contacted recently, Capt. Doug Pike said. All received unsolicited calls at home from the suspect asking for personal information, including credit card information, because their computer programs allegedly needed to be updated.

Microsoft does not make cold calls. If called, hang up, the Sheriff’s Office advises.

Nice. I called our computer task force about this TWO MONTHS ago. It took until one of finest was scammed for them to be concerned. And there not even reporting the scam properly.
THIS IS THE SCAM. A man will call you saying he is from Microsoft and your computer is infected. He will ask you to check a specific file in your computer. This file contains junk info. He tells you you are infected and your info is being broadcast to hackers. He is very agressive, he has a heavy Indian accent. Once you are hooked they will switch you to Microsoft headquarters to correct it for a fee. They are using SKYPE to call you so there is no trace. They will robo call you forever if you don't pick up. I got close to 8 calls a day. There is more info on this on the web. I decided to mess with them rather than hang up. Wasting their time and telling them you are a cop gets them off your back fast.
Thanks for the great job in warning everyone about the specific's of this scam NPD. :-(

This scam has been going on for months. Where have these employees been? It's been in the papers and there have been numerous e-mails floating around giving warnings of this scam.
