Juel Henderson passed away on Aug. 26, 2012. She was born March 25, 1934, in Long Beach, Calif., to Chief Petty Officer Mclaren (Chet) and Dorothy Chadwick. She moved to France with her parents, living there until the war broke out in 1939. She was sent to her grandmother’s house in Taft until she was 7. She then took a train by herself to Washington, D.C., to be with her parents. Juel came to California, married John (Jack) Henderson, and they raised six children.

Juel went through the 10th grade and started her career as a waitress with the Hot Shoppes of the East Coast at the age of 15. She went to the Hot Shoppes School for all restaurant services. She had a 35-year career working at Delmonico’s in Washington, D.C., the Hot Shoppes of the East Coast, the El Real in Rutherford and the Red Hen with Bob Sterns. She also had her own catering company and helped to open what is now the Red Rock Cafe.

Juel then ventured to a new career as a hostess and passenger greeter for hot air balloon companies in the Napa Valley. She worked for Chuck Foster and then Nielson and Carol Ann Rogers, until the 2011 season.

Juel was involved and contributed to many charities and causes throughout her life. She helped create the Wine Tasting Event at the Napa Valley College to raise funds for tuition for the FOCUS program.

Juel is survived by her children, Elliot (Francine Colvin), Janet Verlander (Michael), Debra Casanova (Armando), Thomas, Craig (Karen); grandchildren, Rachael, Leah, Mark, Todd, Cindy, Armando Jr., Aiden and Kenna; and great-grandchildren, Lea, Chloe and Stella. Juel was predeceased by her youngest daughter, Dottie, in 2010.

A memorial service will be held on Nov. 18 in the Tulocay Chapel at 2 p.m. The memorial service will be a combined service for Juel and her husband, John. A gathering following the service will be held in the Tulocay Reception Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Memories and words of sympathy may be sent to the family online at TulocayCemetery.org.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Elliot, Janet, Tom, Debbie, Craig and their loved ones on the recent death of their parents (Juel in August and John in November). I will always remember the many ways Juel and Jack cared for me while I was attending Justin-Siena High School with Dottie, their daughter. They always made me feel warmly welcome in their home during those years. Know that I am saddened by the news and mourn with all of you at this time. I will never forget their goodness and kindness! May they now intercede for us before the Living God who has brought them home to enjoy their heavenly reward. "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them." May you be comforted and supported by the best thoughts, heartfelt concern, and personal prayers for all of you as you grieve their loss. Michael F Murphy FSC - Saint Mary's College of California
