In honor of the birthday and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the MLK Coalition, Napa County Office of Education, and League of Women Voters of Napa County are pleased to announce the 2018 MLK Dare to Dream Contest, open to middle school students throughout Napa County.

This year’s theme asks contestants to envision their future: “In Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech given in 1963, he states ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.’” Contestants are then asked, “What is your dream for the future?”

Contestants should write no more than 100 words and include the student’s name, grade level, school name, and a contact phone number. Entries may be submitted via email to Jesus.Tijero@countyofnapa.org or via U.S. mail to 2018 MLK Dare to Dream, 1195 Third Street, Suite 310, Napa, CA 94559. The deadline to submit an entry is Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018. A winner from each grade level in each middle school will win a special prize and be honored during the MLK weekend celebration.

The celebration will start on Sunday, Jan. 14 with a viewing and discussion of American documentary “13th” at 6 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom – 1455 Elm Street, Napa. On Monday, Jan. 15 we will have community service projects throughout the day, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., culminating with the Community Celebration at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 960 Caymus Street, Napa.
