In response to the letter written by Jon Garate, “Our society is very sick,” (Feb. 28): our society is very sick indeed.

It takes a village to raise a child, but what happens when our village is full of chaos and confusion?

A recent example is the event that took place in Yountville on March 9. Our military trained that young man to carry out missions similar to the hostage situation that occurred. In war, he’d be touted as a hero, and yet we’re appalled when it occurs on our own soil.

We are living in very violent times, and as prophesied, iniquity has come to its fullness. Isaiah the prophet said, “the whole head is sick… from the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it.” (Isa 1:5-6)

The task of raising good, morally sound individuals is a responsibility that has been handed over to the media, video games and overwhelmed school personnel. Most parents don’t even have time to teach their own children anymore. Our moral compass is faltering, to say the least.

This is prophecy fulfilled as well: “For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not.” (Eccl 7:20)

Our current leader is a perfect example of the moral degradation of our society. A leader should set the highest standard, but those in power today are the most abase of men that worship money and weapons of war.

Again, this was prophesied by Isaiah: “For the leaders of this people cause them to err; … Therefore the LORD shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks foolishness.” (Isa 9:16-17)

Is it any wonder that our own ways are coming upon our own heads? We turned away from the righteous laws of our Creator, so He has turned away from us. As it was in the days of Noah when mankind was destroyed because they had filled the earth with violence (see Gen 6:11-13), our time limit is coming to a close.

If we don’t return to God and amend our ways, all hope will be lost. Seek Him while He can be found in order for God’s mercy to return (see Isa 55:6-8). The time is now – we must beat our swords into plowshares and cease from all violence and deceit.
