I read with interest Sean Scully's column published July 23 ("Hopping Aboard the Straight-Talk Express") about Sen. John McCain. As a Democrat, I viewed Sen. McCain as one on the other side of the credibility gulf. However, I came to respect him following the exchange between a deranged woman and him during a 2008 campaign rally.
The woman approached him and stated "Obama is a Muslim" or words to that effect. McCain stopped her, saying that was not true, that Obama was a "decent man," which earned him jeers from the Republican crowd. It was then I realized the man had great integrity. This was reinforced when McCain delivered his concession speech when Obama won the presidency in 2008.
Although McCain has declined once the Republican powers that be "ate his brains," but he still shows the fire-in-the- belly attitude, and for that I respect the man. We have our differences, true, but he has the grit, which his current colleagues in the Senate lack. He is a real survivor.
Be well, Sen. McCain!
