Big Game XXXVII: Vintage at NapaLast week: Colby Silva had a fumble recovery and Juan Martinez and David Smith sparked Napa’s defense as it shut out Vacaville’s explosive offense over the final 11⁄2 quarters of a 50-35 victory that clinched a share of the MEL title. Vintage kept its playoff hopes alive with a 42-21 rout at Armijo, as Jacob Roscoe returned from injury to score a career-best four TDs and 181 yards on 18 carries.

Vintage wins, keeps playoff hopes aliveFAIRFIELD — Jacob Roscoe returned for Vintage High School Friday night, and that’s just what the Crushers needed. Roscoe, out last week with an injury to his neck, scored a career-best four touchdowns and rushed for 181 yards on 18 carries as the Crushers kept their CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff hopes alive, beating Armijo, 42-21, in a Monticello Empire League football game at Brownlee Field.

Vintage (3-5, 1-2 MEL) at Armijo (3-5, 0-3)Last week: Vintage amassed 442 yards in total offense and Sean Ryan passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but the Crushers lost their Monticello Empire League game to Vacaville, 35-19. It was the Crushers’ second straight loss. Armijo lost its fourth straight game, falling 23-9 to Wood.

Vacaville (5-2, 2-0 MEL) at Vintage (3-4, 1-1)Last week: Vintage lost 26-21 to Fairfield, giving up a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and blowing a nine-point lead with 11:40 to go. Vintage’s defense gave up four passing touchdowns and 418 yards of total offense. Vacaville crushed Armijo, 83-35, tying a Bulldogs school record for points in a game.
Twin engines revvingThey’re identical twins and best friends. They’re two-way starters for the Vintage High School football team who have great passion for the game and are around the ball a lot of the time as impact players.
Wood (2-3) at Vintage (2-3)Last year: With Sean Ryan passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns and Trevor McLaughlin rushing for 136 yards and a TD, Vintage beat Wood, 34-30, in Vacaville. Kyle Archer intercepted three passes, the last coming on a fourth down and 5 from the Wood 47-yard line with 33 seconds to go that sealed the win. The Crushers also nailed down one of the Monticello Empire League’s three spots into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.

Crushers prep for MEL football actionEleven hours after its biggest win of the football season, Vintage High School coaches and players were back at work Saturday, looking at film, seeing what went right and wrong in a 37-12 nonleague victory over Hogan-Vallejo, stretching, getting team pictures taken, and looking ahead to the Monticello Empire League opener Oct. 17.
Crusher offense arrivesVintage High School’s Homecoming was a rousing success Friday night at Napa Memorial Stadium, with the Crushers pummeling Hogan-Vallejo, 37-12, to break a two-game losing streak.

Hogan (1-3) at Vintage (1-3)Last year: Derek Long, a talented wide receiver and return specialist, caught three touchdown passes from Sean Ryan, returned a punt 80 yards for a score, and had two more long returns on punts as Vintage annihilated Hogan, 70-12, at Corbus Field in Vallejo.
Vintage (1-2) at Rocklin (1-2)Last year: Vintage was intercepted five times and also turned the ball over on a fumble in a 28-14 nonleague loss to Rocklin on Homecoming at Napa Memorial Stadium.

Lincoln logs lopsided winMichael Spanos’ 80-yard touchdown run for Lincoln-Stockton started a big-time scoring spree for the Trojans as they beat Vintage High School, 44-7, in the season opener for both schools Friday night at Napa Memorial Stadium.
Lincoln (0-0) at Vintage (0-0)Last year: Vintage fell behind early and lost the nonleague game to Lincoln, 24-22, in Stockton. But the second half of the season-opening contest belonged to the Crushers as Sean Ryan, making his varsity debut at quarterback, ran for two touchdowns, passed for another and completed a two-point conversion pass.
