Jared Horn picked up the win and Aaron Shortridge got a no-decision for Cal, which continued its season with a Pac-12 series against host Washington State in Pullman, Washington, last week.

Horn and Shortridge are Vintage High School graduates.

Horn (4-4), a sophomore right-hander, earned the win as Cal beat Washington State in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, 6-3, at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Horn started and gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out four in six innings.

Shortridge, a junior right-hander, started and pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out four batters in Cal’s 4-3 loss.

Vintage High graduate Mike Neu is the head coach for Cal (21-12 overall, 7-8 Pac-12).

Pacific Association tryout camp, draft April 21

The Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs will hold a tryout camp and draft on Saturday, April 21, at Albert Park in San Rafael.

The independent professional league consists of six teams: Napa Silverados, Vallejo Admirals, Sonoma Stompers, San Rafael Pacifics, Pittsburg Diamonds and Martinez Clippers.

Registration is at 8 a.m. for those who have not pre-registered.

The tryouts – which include fielding and throwing drills for infielders, outfielders and catchers, batting practice for position players, pitching and an intrasquad game – start at 9 a.m. and will finish at 3 p.m. The draft will be later in the day.

The Napa Silverados are an expansion team and opens the 2018 season against the San Rafael Pacifics on May 31 at Napa Valley College’s Storm Field.

The Pacific Association of Professional Baseball Clubs was founded in 2013.

The Silverados will play an 80-game schedule, with 40 of those games being played at Napa Valley College.

MacNichols at Santa Clara

Jake MacNichols, a Vintage High graduate, is batting .223 (23-for-103) with five doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs in 31 games as a sophomore catcher for Santa Clara University.

NVC on four-game winning streak

Napa Valley College (11-19 overall, 5-7 Bay Valley Conference) is on a four-game winning streak.

The Storm has consecutive wins over Mendocino-Ukiah, 9-5, Laney-Oakland, 2-1, and Mendocino, 11-6 and 6-3.

Reno plays in the Pacific Coast League.

Negron is an infielder for Reno.
