Haley Murphy and her younger sister, Grace Murphy, earned All-America honors for the UC San Diego women’s team at the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.Wingate University and the Greensboro Sports Commission served as co-hosts of the event, which was held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in North Carolina last week.
The sisters are from Napa and are New Tech graduates. They swam for the Napa Valley Swim Team.
Haley Murphy, a senior and a two-year team captain, and Grace Murphy, a freshman, swam on the eighth-place 400-yard freestyle relay team and received All-America honors.
Individuals and teams placing first through eighth at the NCAA meet are named All-America.
Haley Murphy swam on UC San Diego’s 400 medley relay team, which placed seventh.

Kelsi Maday is batting .423 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 15 RBIs after 26 games for the UC San Diego softball team (20-7 overall, 13-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association).
Maday, an outfielder, is a Napa High School graduate.
Kris Negron of Napa is batting .256 in 22 games during spring training for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has three doubles, a triple, five RBIs and two stolen bases.
Negron, a utility player, has a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks.
Arizona recalled Negron, who is a 2004 graduate of Vanden High, on Sept. 1, 2017 from Triple-A Reno of the Pacific Coast League. Negron, who can play multiple positions, batted .300 with 13 home runs and 64 RBIs in 120 games for Reno, the PCL Northern Division champion.
Jake MacNichols, a Vintage High graduate, is batting .214 with two doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs after 17 games for the Santa Clara University baseball team (13-5 overall, 2-1 West Coast Conference).
MacNichols is a catcher.

Phil Freitas started and his dad, Paul Freitas, closed for the Solano Vallejo Old Timers team Sunday as they beat Modesto, 16-4, in Northern California Baseball 30-and-over action at Davis Field in Modesto.
Phil Freitas played for Napa High School in 2000 and Paul Freitas played there in 1970.
Phil pitched three innings, giving up two hits and two runs (one earned) with one strikeout.
Paul pitched the last two innings, allowing a leadoff single in the eighth and retiring the side in order in the ninth.
Steve Laughrey got the win after allowing two runs in his four innings of work.
Phil Freitas batted leadoff and scored five runs on a 2-for-3 day with three walks. Paul Freitas scored two runs and walked twice.
