The CIF announced that the 2017 State Volleyball Championships – composed of 181 teams competing in seven divisions – begin on Wednesday with the first round of the regionals.

Justin-Siena High School is the No. 6 seed and will be at home against No. 11 Escalon at 7 p.m. in the Division V playoffs at Clark Gym.

Justin-Siena (11-12 overall, 5-5 Marin County Athletic League) finished sixth in the MCAL standings.

The Braves lost to Redwood-Larkspur in the league playoffs, 3-1.

They went 1-1 in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs, beating Arcata, 3-0, and losing to Branson-Ross, 3-2.

Escalon (17-11 overall, 8-4 Trans Valley League) finished third in the league standings.

Escalon went 2-1 in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, beating Bear River-Grass Valley, 3-0, and Calaveras-San Andreas, 3-0, and losing to Bret Harte-Angels Camp, 3-1.

San Marin-Novato (16-11 overall, 7-5 MCAL) is the No. 1 seed in the Division V bracket.

The other No. 1 seeds, by division, are Archbishop Mitty-San Jose (Open Division), James Logan-Union City (Division I), Carlmont-Belmont (Division II), Santa Catalina-Monterey (Division III), Presentation-San Jose (Division IV), and Woodland Christian (Northern California Division VI).

The state finals are on Dec. 1 and 2 at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.

All matches through the regional finals will take place at host sites at 7 p.m.

Host Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo shut out UC Irvine on Saturday at Mott Athletics Center, 3-0, to win the Big West Conference volleyball championship and clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The scores were 25-11, 25-20, 25-16.

Cal Poly (24-2 overall, 14-0 Big West), ranked No. 22 in the AVCA National Top 25 Poll, was led by Torrey Van Winden, who had 13 kills on a .520 kill percentage, five digs, two block assists and 15 points. Her sister, Adlee Van Winden, had five kills, five digs and five points.

It’s the first conference title for Cal Poly since 2007.

Torrey Van Winden had 11 kills on a .476 kill percentage, six digs, two block assists and 13 points as Cal Poly swept UC Davis last week, 3-0.

The scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-16.

Adlee Van Winden had seven kills on a .700 kill percentage, six digs and eight points.

Torrey and Adlee are Vintage High School graduates and are from Napa.
