The Pacific Union College men’s basketball team lost its season opener on Thursday, 89-64 on the road to William Jessup University of Rocklin in a nonconference game.

Brandon Franklin scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds and two steals to lead the Pioneers.

Jayson Marquez had 19 points and three assists, Rae Hubbard scored 12 points, and Noel Briones had four rebounds and three assists.

Pacific Union visits Fresno State on Oct. 30 for an exhibition game.

Kathleen Scavo, a Justin-Siena graduate, tied for 35th place for the University of Oregon women’s golf team at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview, which was cancelled after two rounds due to weather earlier in the week.

Scavo shot 77-75 – 152 at the Nanea Golf Club at Kailua Kona, Hawaii.

Oregon tied for 10th in the team scoring.

Scavo, a junior, led Oregon in scoring average, completing the fall schedule at 73.00.

The Pacific Union College volleyball team won its nonconference match at home Wednesday over William Jessup, 3-2, in Angwin.

Amanda Loeffler had23 kills and 19 digs to lead the Pioneers.

Morgan Spencer had 19 kills, Lauren Purdom finished with 14 kills, and Chace Rogers had 21 digs.

Tiana Whittington had 27 set assists and Hannah Clarke had 22 set assists.

Ryan Johnson tied for 32nd place for the Santa Clara University men’s golf team at the Bill Cullum Invitational earlier this month.

Johnson, a St. Helena High graduate, had rounds of 72, 70 and 77 for a 3-over-par 219 total at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, California.

The Amgen Tour of California, a Tour de France-style cycling road race, is scheduled for May 13-19, 2018. There are seven stages, with cyclists riding 600-plus miles.

Stage 1 is on May 13 in Long Beach.

The Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race is set for May 17-19 and covers upward of 150 miles over three stages. Stage 1 is on May 17 in Elk Grove.

Lucy Li of Redwood Shores, Calif., was named as a first-team Rolex Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association, it was announced on Thursday.

Li earned an exemption into the LPGA’s first major of the year after winning the 2017 ANA Junior Inspiration, the AJGA said in a press release. She also won The PING Invitational for her second AJGA Invitational title of the season.

Li, 15, was a member of the 2016 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team and 2017 PING Junior Solheim Cup Team.

Scott McCarron, a Vintage High graduate, continues the PGA Tour Champions’ Schwab Cup Playoffs at the PowerShares QQQ Championship at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., this week.

It’s the second of three tournaments in the playoffs.

McCarron has four wins this season. He has been No. 2 in the Schwab Cup standings 16 of 24 weeks this season, including each of the last 11, according to the Tour.
