Tate Battistini is a returning outside hitter for the Sonoma State volleyball team, which opens the 2017 season on Aug. 31 at home against Pacific Union College in a nonconference match. It’s a 5 p.m. start at the Wolves’ Den in Rohnert Park.

Battistini, a sophomore, is a St. Helena High School graduate who made 12 appearances last year for Sonoma State.

Sonoma State has been picked to finish first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division, according to a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. The poll was announced by the conference office.

Scott McCarron is second in the Schwab Cup standings on the PGA Tour Champions. The Vintage High graduate and former Napa resident has three wins, eight top-10 finishes, and $1,706,055 in earnings during the 2017 season, one of his best as a tour player.

McCarron shot a final-round 64 and won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open by a one shot over Kevin Sutherland last week at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, New York. McCarron birdied the last three holes and won the tournament with a 15-foot putt on No. 18.

In his last 32 starts, he has five wins and four runner-up finishes.

The PGA Tour Champions is at the 13th annual Boeing Classic at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington this week. It offers a $2.1 million purse.

There are six events remaining to qualify for the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.


The NBA champion Golden State Warriors’ four-game preseason schedule includes two games at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

The Warriors will face Denver on Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m., and will meet Sacramento on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The Warriors will play two games against Minnesota in China. The Warriors and Timberwolves will play on Oct. 4 at Shenzhen Universiade Center in Shenzhen, China. The two teams will play on Oct. 8 at Mercedes-Benz Arena at Shanghai, China.


Training camp for the San Jose Sharks begins on Sept. 15 at Solar4America Ice in San Jose.

It’s the first session of camp for the team.
