Eagles fly in LEST in Portland

More than 70 students from St. John’s Lutheran School participated in the Lutheran Elementary School Tournament (LEST), hosted by Concordia University on Feb. 14-16 in Portland, Ore.

More than 900 students representing 19 schools from five western states participated in academic, athletic, performing arts and recreational activities.

Among the highlights for the Eagles:

• Boys basketball (seventh and eighth grade) — first place, defeated Faith-Las Vegas 49-33.

• Girls basketball (seventh and eighth grade) — second place, fell to Prince of Peace-Fremont in the championship game, 25-20.

• Swim team (fifth-eighth grade) — First place, with six LEST swim records broken:

— Maddie Perna, eighth grade, 25-yard backstroke and 25-yard butterfly. Perna was also the high-point winner.

— Elise Semple, eighth grade, 25-yard breaststroke.

— John Moss, Ethan Wesson, Jordan Bowman-Davis and Rhys Irwin, boys fifth-sixth grade 100-yard freestyle relay.

— Jon Semple, Josh Pratt, Connor Wesson and Wyatt Irwin, boys seventh-eighth grade 100-yard freestyle relay.

— Josh Pratt, Connor Wesson, Clayton D’Angelo and Jon Semple, boys seventh-eighth grade 100-yard medley relay.

— Isabella Corley was also high-point winner.

• Coached by Susan Sange, 16 girls (fifth through eighth grade) participated in the dance team competition. The St. John’s team captured first place in the AAA Division by performing a contemporary/hip hop dance.
