The Napa Christian girls basketball team pulled out an improbable 37-36 nonleague victory over Pacific Union College Prep Thursday night in Angwin.
The Falcons led 26-12 at halftime and 36-22 after three quarters. But the Knights blanked the hosts 15-0 in the fourth quarter to prevail. An Amy Rivas free throw with 30 seconds left provided the winning point.
“Honestly, they probably thought they had it won,” Napa Christian coach Darren Smith said of the Falcons (2-7). “It’s hard in girls basketball to turn it back on.”
Ashlee Churches led the Knights (5-3 overall) with 14 points, Elizabeth Carr and Rivas each scored nine, Morgan Frederick had four and Monica Flores added two.
Napa Christian was playing for the first time without Ashley Ferris, whom Smith said sustained a season-ending snowboarding injury during the holiday break.
“It was a good game to come back and let the girls know we can still win shorthanded,” said the coach, who now has seven players.
The Knights will try to improve on their 3-0 Small School Bridge League record at 6 p.m. Tuesday, when they visit Summerfield Waldorf at Analy High in Sebastopol. PUC Prep visits Tomales on Thursday, then visits Napa Christian on Jan. 20.
