Vintage High School girls wrestler Izza Belle Ygnalaga was the only one of the four Crushers to qualify for this Friday and Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section-Northern Section Masters Championships at McNair High in Stockton.
The senior advanced at 131 pounds by placing fifth with a 5-2 record at the Feb. 2-3 North Regional Qualifier at Natomas High in Sacramento, improving her season record to 24-13.
Ygnalaga opened by pinning a pair of sophomores in the first period, Durham’s Natalie Nees in 1:32 and Brooke Addington of Rodriguez in 1:51. She was pinned in the second period of her quarterfinal by Nevada Union sophomore Sarah Skotnicki in 3:33.
She came back with a first-period pin of Monterey Trail senior Mikata Aumua, in 1:23, and a second-period pin of Ponderosa senior Lillian Castillo, in 2:09. After getting pinned by the eventual fourth-placer, Bella Vista senior Nicole Strand, Ygnalaga avenged her loss to Skotnicki with a 12-4 major decision in the fifth-place match.
Senior 116-pounder Chloe Jones went 1-2, finishing her season with a 21-17 record. She opened with a 4-3 win over Oak Ridge junior Anna Baldar, but lost 14-3 to Folsom sophomore and eventual runner-up Desinee Lopez. Jones bowed out with a 13-9 loss to Del Oro freshman and eventual seventh-placer Annastasia Culmer.
Erika Eberhardt, who came in with only a 3-6 record, was pinned by fellow sophomores in each of her 143-pound matches – McClatchy’s Gabriell Sanchez in the third period (4:48) and Wood’s Kailee Rivera in the second period (3:08).
Senior 189-pounder Martha Avina, who came in with a 19-11 record, won’t get a chance to return to the state meet for the second year in a row. After losing by injury default with 33 seconds left in her first match, against Oroville junior Kristina Wilson, she was unable to start her second match.
Ygnalaga will join five Masters qualifiers from American Canyon – seniors Maricela Seronio and Adrienne Dominguez, juniors Yvonne Cruz and Alexis Schuller, and freshman Maylin Reyes.
