A large number of people turned out to taste and judge the 2006 Napa Valley merlots on Thursday, Nov. 12 in the Rudd Center at the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone in St. Helena.

The top five wines, from least expensive to most expensive, were:

Castello di Amorosa, Napa Valley, $34

Trefethen Family Vineyards, Oak Knoll District, $35

Bravante Vineyards, Howell Mountain, $40

Kenefick Ranch, Napa Valley, $42

Blackbird Vineyards, Illustration Proprietary red wine, $90
