Oscar Renteria and his father, Salvador, delivered the keynote address to the second annual Día de la Familia on July 21 in Napa offering inspiration and encouragement to the largely Latino community in attendance.

The annual event, designed as part heritage celebration and part information fair, had nearly 50 various public and private agencies and educational institutions on hand to meet with the more than 1,600 people in attendance.

“This was a fantastic gathering, and we could not have been more honored when asked to deliver the keynote,” said Oscar Renteria, whose Renteria Vineyard Management company is one of the largest wine grape growers on the north coast. Delivering the address in Spanish with his now-retired father, Renteria shared the story of their family’s success — and offered encouragement to a new generation of Latino immigrants and farmworkers. His message included working hard, but also of working toward a goal.

Summing it up, the younger Renteria said, “This was a great opportunity to represent and speak to farmworkers and their families, to relate to my father and where we came from, to know the opportunities that exist every day, and to be a beacon, a model to youth in the Napa Valley even now.”

Día de la Familia was funded by the Napa Valley Grapegrowers’ Farmworker Foundation, which just this year has offered educational programs to more than 2,600 individuals, a more than 15 percent increase over 2012. Jennifer Putnam, executive director of the NVG, said these are not “tailgate” meetings but rather multilevel courses in English language, math, business development, viticulture, citizenship, leadership and more. She said, “Oscar Renteria joined the committee that oversees farmworker education programs and has brought great energy and excitement to this already well-regarded initiative.”
