Velo Vino to release 2012 chardonnay

St. Helena’s Clif Family Winery at Velo Vino will release its inaugural 2012 Oak Knoll Chardonnay on Saturday.

Attendees will be able to enjoy this special chardonnay and cheese pairing featuring local cheeses from Cow Girl Creamery from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the tasting room, 709 Main St., just south of the downtown.

Winiarski to address CIA class in August

Famed Napa Valley winemaker Warren Winiarski will speak on the evolution of the artisan winemaker in Napa Valley at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone on Aug. 8.

 His audience is the senior class of the Culinary Bachelor of Arts program — 21 students from the New York campus, who are in the Napa Valley pursuing a “Concentration in Wine” for a semester this summer.

Winiarski, whose cabernet sauvignon bested the top French wines at the famous Paris Tasting in 1976, will speak about his personal history in the California wine industry and his views on the current state of the industry as well as taking a look into the future of the artisan winemaker.

Mexican-American Vintners to host ‘Vendimia’

The Napa Sonoma Mexican-American Vintners Association will host the third annual Community Fundraiser from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, at Robledo Family Winery in Carneros. This year’s theme is “Vendimia,” which is Spanish for “harvest.”

Association members will pour their wines, which will be served with food from local restaurants while being serenaded by a strolling mariachi band. There will be a silent auction to shop for one-of-a-kind offerings such as private dinners and library wines. Scholarships will be awarded at the event to qualifying students of Napa Valley College and Santa Rosa Junior College.

Turnbull to celebrate harvest

Turnbull Wine Cellars will celebrate its 34th harvest with an Aug. 31 party at the winery. The event, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., will include a harvest barbecue feast, live music and Turnbull’s 100 percent estate-grown library and current wines.

‘Best of Wine Tourism Awards’ sought

The San Francisco-Napa Valley regional segment of the 2014 Great Wine Capitals “Best of Wine Tourism Awards” has been launched.

The awards celebrate innovation and excellence in wine tourism throughout the 10 greatest wine regions in the world. Entries are accepted until Sept. 20 at Awards will be given in seven categories: Accommodations, wine tourism services, wine tourism restaurants and four open to wineries only: Architecture and landscapes, art and culture, innovative wine tourism experiences and sustainable wine tourism practices.

The regional and international awards ceremony will be held in November at the Culinary Institute of America for the Great Wine Capitals Annual General Meeting.
