Araujo named vice president

Jaime Araujo has joined her family company, Araujo Estate Wines, as vice president of international markets. She is the first second-generation family member to join the company.

Araujo will take on the full-time management of Araujo Estate’s sales, marketing, events and promotions in all European and Asian markets. She will continue to be based in Paris, France, where she has managed Araujo Estate’s international sales and marketing on a consulting basis since early 2012.

Sterling wines poured at Oscars celebration

Winemakers Harry Hansen and Alison Crary of Calistoga’s Sterling Vineyards chose five of its wines to be poured at the Oscars after being selected as the exclusive wine provider at Sunday’s event.

The wines were the 2007 Sterling Reserve Cabernet, the 2009 Sterling Reserve Chardonnay and three limited-production dessert wines. They were paired with a menu and some 50 hors d’oeuvres created by Master Chef Wolfgang Puck for the Governors Ball, which is the official celebration of the Oscars.

Shoults joins Vermeil Wines tasting room

Thomas Shoults has been named wine club manager for Vermeil Wines, which is based in Calistoga. Shoults has more than 20 years of experience in wine.

“Thomas has a deep knowledge of the wine industry, and that makes him a valuable part of the Vermeil Wines team,” said Dick Vermeil, Super Bowl–winning coach and partner with winemaker Paul Smith of OnThEdge Winery. “His input will help us grow the wine club, as well as make Vermeil Wines a well-known brand.”

Tickets available for March 20 celebration

Advance tickets are available at $45 for the Howell Mountain Appellation Bud Break Celebration, to be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 in San Francisco.

Attendees will taste wines from 31 Howell Mountain producers at the Bently Reserve, 301 Battery St. Included in the event are assorted artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, seasonal fruit, nuts, olives and Bouchon breads. Tickets are available by visiting or calling 965-2665.

Brooke joins Evening Land Vineyards

Lauren Brooke has joined Evening Land Vineyards as eastern regional sales manager. Brooke’s responsibilities will include the strengthening of the wholesale sales distribution of the Evening Land brands for the eastern region of the country. She is based in the company’s Santa Rosa office.

Brooke holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing and design from Duquesne University. She is a member of the Court of Master Sommeliers, having reached Level II as a certified sommelier. She lives in Napa County. The placement was made by the Cypress Group of St. Helena.

Edwards joins Somerston Wine Company

Jack Edwards has joined the Somerston Wine Company as vice president of sales. The creation of this position marks a new period of growth and expansion for Somerston Wine Company’s brands.

Edwards was most recently director of sales for the Miner Family Winery in Oakville. At Miner since its inception, Edwards spent the past 16 years helping to establish the winery as a nationally recognized brand, selling more than 30,000 cases in 45 states and exporting to more than 10 foreign countries.

Growers group releases new report, workbook

The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) has issued its 2012 Progress Report and Third Edition California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Workbook. Both the report and workbook can be viewed online at This is the first time that the complete workbook has been made publicly available.
