Catherine Seda, the St. Helena Star and Napa Valley Vintners Tasting Panel writer, and Francois Bugue, associate winemaker at Cain Vineyard & Winery, were wed at City Hall in San Francisco on July 18, 2013.
The couple, who have been together 11 years, joked that their decision to get married came after realizing that they still really liked each other after more than a decade together.
The couple met at Cain Vineyard & Winery following Catherine’s move from New York City in 2002. She decided she belonged in Napa Valley after grinning from ear to ear cleaning out wine tanks at wineries back East as she volunteered on weekends and during vacations.
Francois moved to the Napa Valley in 1990, having grown up among his family’s vines, making wine and distilling Cognac in France. His sister, Martine Bugue, and her boyfriend, Patrick Favier, flew in from France for the ceremony.
The couple, discussing the start of their relationship, say it all began with a CO2 warning. CO2, a natural by-product of winemaking, has instant and possibly fatal results when not handled properly. To make his safety point, Francois had Catherine take a big whiff of the gas from the top of an open tank. The intensity of the gas’s effects on the body caused Catherine’s hand to involuntary go up and slap Francois. Luckily, they both started to laugh, and the couple have been dating ever since.
Catherine and Francois Bugue live in Napa with their 9-year old daughter, Maelle.
