The latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine has a feature called “10 Newspapers That Do It Right,” and my favorite local paper earned an honorable mention for its St. Helena Star/Napa Valley Vintners Tasting Panel, in which 20 to 25 grapegrowers, winemakers and other wine professionals get together every month to taste a different varietal. Huzzahs to Star editor Dave Stoneberg, writer Catherine Bugue, Cate Conniff at the Napa Valley Vintners, Traci Dutton at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone and everyone else who helps run the panel.

As editor of the St. Helena Star, Dave is passionate about local journalism, whether it’s wine-related or not. But his other passions are vintage sports cars and, more to the point, recreational cycling. He asked me to invite everyone to what’s being called “Ride at 5,” a one-hour bike ride starting at 5 p.m. every Wednesday behind St. Helena Cyclery. All are welcome. For details call Rob at St. Helena Cyclery: 963-7736.

Speaking of cycling, a St. Helenan is needed to represent the community on the Napa County Active Transportation Advisory Committee, which advises the Napa Valley Transportation Authority on matters involving safe cycling and walking throughout the county. You can pick up at application at City Hall or at cityofsthelena.org/forms. For information about the committee, go to nvta.ca.gov.

In my dreams, “Antiques Roadshow” sets up shop at the Native Sons Hall and tells me how much my aunt’s old handmade cuckoo clock is really worth. That’s not happening, but here’s the next best thing: the History Channel show “American Pickers” is coming to California and is looking for anyone with unique antique collections and interesting stories behind them. If you have a one-of-a-kind collection, call 1-855-OLD-RUST or email AmericanPickers@cineflix.com.

Hats off to St. Helena’s Tara Beltrami for being named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at the Rochester Institute of Technology. This is at least the third time I’ve gotten word of her academic exploits, so she’s obviously one smart cookie.

Mark your calendars for the Robert Louis Stevenson Poetry Slam on April 27 at the St. Helena Public Library, celebrating the great author’s work and the local poets (professional and non-) who do their part to burnish St. Helena’s literary reputation. Details to come …

Are there any St. Helenans who graduated from Napa High School’s Class of 1987? If so, be sure to attend the 30th class reunion at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville. The event offers a chance to “party like it’s 1987” – which I wouldn’t know the first thing about, but have fun, kids! Details and tickets are available at Facebook.com/nhsclassof1987reunion.

The Federated Women of Northern Napa Valley are holding a bingo fundraiser at 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Grace Episcopal Church. A $25 donation gets you nine games and a chance at cash prizes. There will be hot dogs, vegetarian minestrone soup, homemade desserts and drinks available for purchase. All proceeds benefit student scholarships, Reading Is Fun, and other local nonprofits. All are welcome.
