Betty Rhodes

Hi everyone, welcome.

We have more wonderful events coming up for seniors that I am eager to share with you.

This is a reminder of this year’s October theme for Celebrating Seniors. The theme is “The Power of Age, 2017 CIRQUE DE NAPA” being held at Chardonnay Hall at Napa Expo Fairgrounds. Come and join the fun. Let your hair down, have fun, dance and sing, enjoy Betty Buttons the Clown, Wine Country Aerialists, the Bubble Show, Bleeding Heart Dancers, Wild Cat Adventures, Boots and Belles, with lots of music and information tables. The date is Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets are $3 for folks over 50 and $5 for all others. Tickets will be available at the door. The event has been chaired, once again, by the very capable Yvonne Baginski. Reserve tickets in advance by calling 492-3198.

Another reminder is for the StopFalls event on Monday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon (check in at 8:30). The event is, in part, to award the 50 seniors who have graduated from the Matter of Balance program at Rohlffs Manor.

I’ve been in contact with Laura Furman, StopFalls Seniors Coordinator, with Area Agency on Aging, who added that there are plans for many activities and messages on the importance of balance as we get older. Laura was excited to hear from Family Drug Store that they would be coming to the event and bringing diabetic shoes, that Laura says are quite attractive, with applications for people’s insurance to cover the cost. She also shared that Matter of Balance, which is an evidence-based fall prevention program, will be having another class starting in November at the Napa Senior Center. It will consist of eight sessions in two hours with the focus on balance and strengthening exercises. You can register by calling the Area Agency on Aging at 643-1797.

A little side note: Area Agency on Aging has several free workshops available to get us moving toward better balance, and I’m sure Laura will have more information on the workshops when we see her at the event. Breakfast Bar will be available and lunch will be provided.

The location is: Rohlffs Manor, the Concordia Building Dining Room, 2435 Sutherland Drive. Parking is available on Sutherland Drive, Baywood Lane or Linda Vista Ave.

I hope that many of you had the opportunity to attend the Napa County Commission on Aging meeting on Sept. 25, and learn about the new Aging and Disability Resources website for seniors to access information and services available to them. I hope that you will share what you learned with your friends and family. It’s an exciting new “tool” that will assist seniors, caregivers, families, professionals, those with disabilities. We are so very fortunate to have this available to us. We’ll cover more of this exciting topic in a future column.

Now for some important dates for folks who may be grieving. If you are, I’m terribly sorry. I do have some classes that Robbie Hayes from Collabria Care sent to us that I hope you will find helpful.

A Monday Group, meeting from 3 to 4:30 p.m., on the following dates Oct. 16, 23, 30, and Nov. 6;

A Wednesday Group meeting at 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the following dates: Oct. 18, 25, and Nov. 1 and 8;

Both groups meet at 414 Jefferson St., Napa.

This is an eight-week support group (both began earlier this week) for adults who have experienced the loss of a love one, no matter how recently. The workshop provides a safe environment where you can share your feelings and experiences in a supportive group setting, while receiving expert insights and advice.

“When somebody first comes to see me and they’re grieving it’s kind of like, I see a branch, and they come in and there’s this branch. But over time you start to see a bud come off of that branch, and then you get to see that bud bloom.

“And when somebody first comes in and they feel like there’s no blooming, there’s not going to be anymore life ahead of me or any joy ahead of me or I’m not going to be able to do these things, I’m not going to be able to celebrate a Christmas again or go to this house or go on this outing because my grief is so profound. To see that change over time is invaluable.” — Janeen Fabulae

This is a free community service, however, registration is required. For more information or to register contact Janeen Fabulae, 258-9080 or jfabulae@collabriacare.org.

There is also a Weekly Grief Support Group, which is ongoing. This is for all adults grieving a loss.

Available on Thursdays, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., located at 414 Jefferson St. Napa. No registration is required. This is a free community service.

Well, my friends, that about wraps it up. I hope that you’ve found a few things to tweak your interest.

Find joy in what you do, be happy with who you are, and make each day count. Help others less fortunate than you are. Round out your life with kind deeds and we’ll chat again soon. bettyrrhodes@sbcglobal.net
