NAPA VALLEY UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS
At 9:30 a.m.: Leader Shawna Bynum Personal Spiritual Practices when the subject of personal spiritual practices comes up, one word seems to rise above all the rest: prayer. Prayer is an expansive concept that can be practiced in an endless variety of ways, but it exemplifies a solitary component of spirituality. Prayer can be understood as a tool by which we learn to quiet the noise and listen. Many of the various practices our human family has created are merely ways for us to listen to this "voice" so that we might benefit from what it has to say. At 11 a.m.: “Becoming the Beloved Community” Traditional service with Rev. Sonya Sukalski and Celebrant, Sylvia Weaver Jones. Unitarian Universalist Congregations across the country have taken up the call to consider the addition of an 8th principle about how we accomplish the community we all dream about. We take up the yearning so many of us experience to live in an ethical community that accepts our struggles and pain, allows and encourages our healing, and then pays it forward as newcomers walk through our doors. In what ways are we doing this already? In what ways do we need to learn and grow to become more beloved to each other? What helps heal the inevitable wounds we accumulate because we are humans living with other humans? How can we create institutions where power is checked and not allowed to oppress the most vulnerable? Possible language for this 8th principle now being discussed and studied is: “We the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote journeying toward spiritual wholeness by building a diverse, multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.
