Cabaret is set in 1931 Berlin at the end of the libertine Weimar Republic. Nationalist forces are rising to power. It focuses on the entertainers at the Kit Kat Klub, their friends, and audience members where the A quirky Master of Ceremonies leads the festivities. Among the crowd is a young American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, who develops a relationship with an English cabaret performer, Sally Bowles, while ominous political developments loom over the libertine world of late Weimar Germany. The 1966 original Broadway production became a major hit, inspiring numerous subsequent productions in London and New York, as well as the 1972 film of the same name.
