Lava Vine’s 2015 Grüner Veltliner is crisp and refreshing with a clear pale yellow color. There’s a floral aroma with notes of honey and orange peel. A rounded mouthfeel leads to flinty flavors, creamy tangerine – think Orange Julius – citrus rind, and lemongrass.
Lava Vine was founded in Calistoga by Joe and Jill Cabral, and purchased by Rudy and Rita von Strasser in 2016. Rudy von Strasser brought with him to the Lava Vine portfolio his award-winning ways with the white-wine grape. Von Strasser was the first winery in California to grow and produce the Austrian Grüner Veltliner, for which he has won awards in Vienna for more than six years.
The von Strasser Winery label continues on, too, producing Diamond Mountain cabernet sauvignons, which are available at the joint tasting room. Other varietals that can be found under the Lava Vine label include grenache, syrah, zinfandel, petite sirah, tempranillo, verdejo, charbono, and lately pinot noir.
The tasting room, located at 965 Silverado Trail, offers both von Strasser and Lava Vine wines. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, and groups of six or more are encouraged to make a reservation. For more information visit vonstrasser.com or call 942-9500.
