After undergoing a major renovation last year, Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa will be expanding with a new restaurant and 12 more rooms.
Concept and menu details for Fleetwood, as the restaurant will be called, are still under development, but it will be a casual spot for visitors and locals, and will feature indoor and outdoor seating.
“Not upscale, fancy stuff, but really approachable. A place where locals and tourists can gather together,” said General Manager Ric Pielstick.
The multi-million dollar project is expected to be completed by fall or winter 2019.
The Lodge recently demolished a long-vacant building next door to make room for the new addition, which will also feature a new lobby.
It was more cost-effective to tear down the old building — which didn’t take much, construction workers said — than seismically retrofit and renovate the old structure.
The building had sat empty for at least 15 years, said Pielstick. Its various incarnations included a German-Swiss restaurant, and the first Fitness First gym in the area.
The space where the current lobby is located will be used for meeting space or something similar, Pielstick said.
The lodge, managed by Filament Hospitality, feels an obligation to the town to upkeep the 5-1/2-acre property as one of the gateways to Calistoga, with its location at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Silverado Trail, Pielstick said.
Last year, the lodge underwent a major renovation, updating the property with a classic American road trip concept, and changing the name from Sunburst Motor Lodge.
“It has a tongue-in-cheek, relaxing but fun and social feel to it,” Pielstick said, and also a nod to movie director Wes Anderson’s quirky style.
The spa also opened last year.
The Motor Lodge also has a bocce ball courts and shows outdoor movies during warmer months.
