Celebrating its centennial, Mountain Home Ranch resort is holding a weekend party July 19-21. There will be a barbecue on Saturday, an old-fashioned chicken dinner on Sunday plus music all weekend and the pools will be open, the owners said.

Among the musical entertainment, owner John Fouts said his nephew Andrew Fouts will perform. Andrew Fouts is a world-class violinist who plays with Chatham Baroque in Pittsburgh and has a long list of accomplishments.

In a nod to the family’s ancestry, there will be a German-themed band with an accordion. The Saturday barbecue is $29 and starts around 5 p.m. and the chicken dinner on Sunday is $22 starting around 3 p.m.

Mountain Home Ranch is located at 3400 Mountain Home Ranch Road. There are no rooms available for overnight stays but tickets to the events can be purchased by calling 942-6616.

Ahnfeldt wines win top awards

A selection of Ahnfeldt Wines won top awards at the San Francisco Chronicle 2013 Wine Competition and the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, both held in June.

The 2010 Ahnfeldt Napa Valley Merlot Reserve won Best of Class; the 2010 Provocative Napa Valley Cabernet won Double Gold and the 2010 Ahnfeldt Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve won a Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle 2013 Wine Competition. More than 4,500 wines were entered.

At the California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition, the 2010 Ahnfeldt Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label won Double Gold and Best of Class: Region awards; while the 2010 Ahnfeldt Napa Valley Merlot Reserve won a Gold and Best of Class: Region awards.

Sunday classes continue at LMR

The “Kitchen Workshop at Long Meadow Ranch,” a summer series of culinary education classes continues on Sunday, July 21, with the “Say Cheese” workshop.

The class will provide educational insight to the local cheeses and producers in the Bay Area. Different types of milks and their characteristics, aging, paired accompaniments and wine pairing potential will be discussed, as well as simply prepared dishes, simply made cheeses (e.g. ricotta), and ways to integrate cheese into weekly meals and special occasions.

Organic winegrowing conference

Limited space is available for the Napa Valley Grapegrowers’ Organic Winegrowing Conference on Thursday, July 25, at Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery in St. Helena.

The event is suitable for vineyard owners, managers and those already practicing organic growing. The range of topics includes the benefits of animals in the vineyard to best practices for hillside farming.

Castello di Amorosa plans ‘Hot Havana Nights’

Calistoga’s Castello di Amorosa will hold its “Hot Havana Nights” celebration from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, July 26. The event includes sultry Cuban music and salsa dancing; authentic Cuban food, slow roasted and paired with Castello wines; barrel tastings of the 2012 wines with winemaker Brooks Painter and an assortment of fine cigars. New sandwiches at Oakville Grocery

Chef Jason Rose of the Oakville Grocery, with locations in Oakville and Healdsburg has crafted five new sandwiches for the summer.

They are:

• Oakville Muffaletta ($13) — toscano salami, sopresatta, ham, provolone, muffaletta, pickled pepper relish, ciabatta

• Cuban ($13) — slow roasted pork shoulder, ham, yellow mustard, pickles, swiss cheese, aioli, torpedo roll

• Quinoa Falafel ($9.50) — spinach lavash, spicy hummus, harissa greek yogurt, grilled eggplant, cucumber, pickles, wrap

Wine classes offered

Wine industry pro Victor Orozco will be teaching the wine appreciation classes this fall at the Napa Valley College – Upper Valley Campus in St. Helena.

The schedule includes a Wine Appreciation Workshop on offered on Thursday, Aug. 22, 5-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to noon, and Wednesday, Oct. 9, 5-7 p.m.

A wine education class for tasting room service is from 8-10 a.m., Tuesdays, from Aug. 20 to Sept. 10 and from 8-10 a.m., on Tuesdays from Sept. 24 to Oct. 15.

A course for sommeliers leading to a Napa wine appreciation certificate is from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 19 to Nov. 21.

Turnbull to celebrate harvest

Turnbull Wine Cellars will celebrate its 34th harvest with an Aug. 31 party at the winery. The event, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., will include a harvest barbecue feast, live music and Turnbull’s 100 percent estate grown library and current wines.
