High schoolers excel in competition

It was a banner weekend for the St. Helena High School Music Program, with all four ensembles winning first-place honors in a Music in the Parks competition at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.

Competing with about 40 bands and choirs from around the Bay Area and a few from outside of California, St. Helena earned the following top awards:

  • Women’s Ensemble: Superior First Place
  • Chamber Singers: Superior First Place
  • Concert Band: Excellent First Place – Best Overall Concert Band
  • Jazz Band: Excellent First Place – Best Overall Jazz Band

Jerry Schweiger was recognized as Best Overall Jazz Soloist and David Meyer was recognized as Best Overall Choir Accompanist.

Program director Alba Gonzalez-Arredondo thanked the St. Helena Public Schools Foundation and everyone else who’s supported the program this year during rehearsals and fundraisers and has encouraged kids to excel in everything they’re passionate about – in this case, music.
