Last winter and spring, the American Canyon Lions Club helped some of the credentialed school nurses screen the vision of approximately 2,655 students. The California Education Code mandates that all students in grades kindergarten, third, fifth, eighth and eleventh grades have their vision screened. There are six credentialed nurses responsible to complete this task every year (in addition to a multitude of other health related duties). Over 10% (290 students) were referred to an eye care specialist for further evaluation.
The Lions Club members purchased expensive Photo-Screeners which quickly and accurately screen for a number of vision disorders, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. American Canyon Lions Club members Ben Anderson, Mike McCamish, Nelia Medereiros, Richard Peterson, Karina Servente and Sam French assisted the credentialed nurses in screening students in elementary, middle and high schools in Napa and American Canyon.
The credentialed nurses are grateful to the American Canyon Lions Club for their generosity of time, materials, patience and dedication to the children of the Napa Valley. Thank you Lions!!
