I’m very disappointed with the NVUSD board's decision to close Legacy High School. Yes, it is a micro school. What it also is is a school that is much needed in our community. Ms. McMaster and Mrs. Duncan have worked tirelessly to make sure this school has succeeded and made a difference over the last five years. Ms. McMaster and Ms. Duncan have shown these students, past and present, more support, care, love, and respect in the two years they are with them than all their previous teachers put together! Without them, teachers who genuinely care, who listen to them, who encourage them and support them wholeheartedly, a lot of these kids will give up and drop out. If we lose one that is too many. Sure, some may even drop out of Legacy but the majority of the students learn it is okay to be who they are. That is because of who the teachers are, dedicated, committed educators. These students start coming to school everyday, which equals more money for you guys. More importantly they want to be there, they like being there. The most inspiring thing to me is when Legacy High helps them find what was hiding inside them all along, that they can succeed and get back on track academically. Ms. M and Mrs. D know how to reach these young adults, they nurture them in a way that leaves me in awe. Not even parents or guardians can get through to their student the way these two can. These amazing women aren’t only teachers, they’re counselors, nurses and to many a second mom. I can honestly say I doubt my son would be walking that stage in June if not for these two awesome teachers.

I wonder how was Ms. McMaster expected to get everything required done in order for accreditation all by herself three years ago? Where was support from ACHS administration and the district? Why does the board keep dancing around this question? It has been asked over and over. Who will take accountability for this awful oversight? And when?! Oversight, a good word to use because Legacy High School has always been overlooked not only by the school district but by ACHS as well. That is why I was so proud when ACHS student Ramya spoke at the May 3 board meeting, how her and a group of her ACHS peers were fighting for Legacy High. Even the kids realize how much this school is needed. In the proposal given to the board it states ‘we purpose selecting an instructor with both teaching and administrative authorizations.’ Ms. McMaster has been both teacher and administration for the last five years! While she receives no support she continually shows it to her students. She is also a great support for parents and guardians. Often texting, emailing, or calling in evenings or weekends. Imagine that, working and not getting paid for it, that’s devotion! I would like to know what exactly does Legacy cost per year to operate? It is one classroom, not an entire campus. Spending an estimated $600,000 over the next three years to get rid of a mascot seems pretty ridiculous when that money could go to saving struggling students.
