Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, Barbara Ann grew up on her family’s farm in neighboring Buckingham County. She attended the University of Virginia for her nursing education, graduating first with a Diploma, and later a Baccalaureate degree. She got her Master’s degree in Nursing at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and stayed on as a faculty member in the School of Nursing. In 1978 she moved to San Francisco for further study, and was awarded a Ph.D. at the University of California, San Francisco. She retired from nursing activities in 2004.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Daniel McMahon, M.D., of Napa, California; her brothers George (Becky) and John (Eloise) of Virginia; and her nieces and nephews and their children. Her sister, Maxine, predeceased her.
The family wishes to thank the very special physicians who cared for Barbara. Dr. Paul Sweigert, Dr. James Srebro, and Dr. Francis Healy were always kindly, caring and competent, as were her other doctors. We thank Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa for consistently excellent care, and Collabria Hospice for their kind attention and care in a difficult time.
No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Queen of the Valley Foundation and Collabria Hospice.
