Betty Jean Richard
Betty left us Dec. 16, 2017 to be with her husband of 65 years, Dan Richard. Betty was born October 17th 1930 on Galveston Island, Texas, to Valor B. and F. Thornton Perry. Her beloved paternal grandmother ran a boarding house that was well known for its Sunday dinners frequented by local politicians and big bands playing the nightclubs. She was proud of being a 3rd generation Texan. A good student, she attended one year at the University of Texas and then worked at Santa Fe Railroad with her father for several years. It was love-at-first-sight for the 17 year-old when she met Dan. Quickly, her beauty and sweet charm won him over and they married in 1949.
After moving to California in 1961, the family settled in Novato. Betty’s generous spirit extended beyond her family and she volunteered for her children’s schools and youth groups. Betty was employed by Eckhoff Accountancy in San Rafael for over 20 years as an administrator. She enjoyed her membership in Soroptimist International. In their retirement, Betty and Dan became avid contract bridge players and they were very proud of their Life Master status. Napa became home in 1998. Her family has countless happy memories of family adventures big and small, of good food, kind words, and her generous, thoughtful ways of making her family feel special.
After Dan passed, Betty was lovingly cared for at home by daughter, Gail, son-in-law, Garry, and her wonderful caregiver, Sue Barstad. Dementia slowly erased the Betty that we knew, but she left behind a legacy of love and quiet strength that we carry forward.
Betty is survived by Gail (Garry) Waggoner, Kit Richard (Rich Dietrich), and Jill (Bruce) Marquand, sister Jessie Turner of Virginia and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to Lewy Body Dementia Assoc.
