Emily Clara Simone Age 92 years
Our dear aunt (zia) Emily died peacefully in her Napa home surrounded by family and friends on February 10, 2018.
Emily was born to Charles and Agostina (Sarina) Gaggini on May 27, 1925 in Salinas CA. She grew up on the family ranch in Gonzales, CA until she graduated from high school. She then moved to Napa with her parents to the family vineyard at 1211 El Centro Ave. She worked at Cameron Shirt Factory and the Napa City Bakery until she married her sweetheart (her joy) Tony Simone on April 1, 1951. Tony built the house they lived in for the rest of their lives.
Shortly after marrying Tony, Emily became the essential home maker where she enjoyed cooking, baking, hunting for mushrooms with her family and gardening (especially her beautiful roses). Emily also enjoyed bowling with her team at the Napa Bowl. Emily followed her husband’s love of hunting and fishing where she continued her important role cooking, keeping the airstream tidy and making many wonderful friendships. Emily loved to knit and crochet and made numerous socks, sweaters and afghans for family and friends. Emily was famous for her cooking and baking. Her family and friends will miss her gnocchi and Napolitano pizza, her pies and especially her ossi de morti (bones) cookies. Emily also loved sharing persimmons from her very bountiful tree.
Emily’s most memorable trips were her 3 month visit to meet family and friends in Switzerland in 1947, her trip to the east coast with Joe and Liz to visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Liberty Bell and her trip to Utah and Wyoming to visit family and Yellowstone Park with her sister where she learned to enjoy huckleberry margaritas.
Emily is survived by her nephews Joe Veltri and Jim Simone who cared for her during the last years of her life. Her brother- and sister-in-law Ray and Anne Simone, who lived next door. Ray’s daily visits to chat and joke with Emily were a constant comfort to her. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Isabel (Regusci) Simone and her cousins Charles (Lavella) Cassinelli, Hazel (Sarina) McQuone, Alyce (Sarina) Polson and Chester Sarina. Emily is also survived by many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.
Emily was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Tony, her parents Charles and Agostina, her sister Josephine and her infant brother Elmer.
The family would like to acknowledge her dear friend and caretaker Josephine Drazek, and the wonderful professionals from Collabria Hospice who provided loving and compassionate care during her final days.
Emily will be on view on Friday, February 16 from 2 to 7 pm followed by a rosary at the Claffey and Rota Funeral Home 1975 Main St. Napa. Funeral service will be held at Claffey and Rota Funeral Home on Saturday February 17 at 11 am followed by internment at Tulocay Cemetery 411 Coombsville Rd. Napa.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the charity of your choice. Memories and notes of sympathy may be shared at claffeyandrota.com.
