Ramona was born in Napa, CA on October 14,1917 and passed away two months before her 100th birthday on August 16, 2017 in St. Helena, CA. She was the daughter of lone Samuels Young and Harrison Young, whose families were early settlers in Napa County. Ramona’s great grandparents, the Samuels, came by wagon train to the Napa Valley about 1854. The Young’s arrived in California in 1850 at the time of the gold rush and also settled in Napa County. Ramona attended school in Napa, the little school house on Oakville Grade Road and graduated from St. Helena High School in 1935 with 12 years of perfect attendance.

Ramona married Leslie Shurtz in Reno, NV and they were married for 61 years until his death in 1996. She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Richard and Barbara Shurtz, St. Helena CA, Raymond and Jane Shurtz, Woodland, Marilyn Walters, (Sam deceased) St. Helena, CA, Laurence and Janet Shurtz, Woodland, CA, Maureen Willde, Yuba City, CA and Michael Shurtz, St. Helena, CA. They later moved to Yuba City, CA until his death when Ramona returned to St. Helena to be closer to family. She was thrilled to be the guest of honor last year at the 80th birthday party of her twin sons. Ramona enjoyed working in her garden, growing wonderful tomatoes at age 95, watching baseball games and doing crossword and jig saw puzzles. She especially loved her family and was interested in all of their activities. The family wishes to thank Lupe Delgadillo and Juana Gutierrez of St. Helena Home Care for their kindness and care of Ramona. Arrangements were taken care of by Morrisons and interment was private at St. Helena Public Cemetery.
