Rose Taylor

Rose passed away peacefully with family by her side, on October 5, 2021, two weeks short of her 99th birthday. Even though she suffered three strokes in the past two years, her mind and sense of humor were with her to the end.

Rose was born to Italian immigrants in St. Helena on Oct 18, 1922, and remained in St. Helena her entire life, even making the local newspaper on several occasions. The first time she was featured in the St. Helena Star was at the age of 2 ½ , when she and the family dog, Fanny, wandered away from home on a Tuesday evening. Some sixty men searched all night in the hills south of town for little Rosie. She was found by Mr. Stillson, a neighbor, Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. on Whitehall Lane, about a mile from her home. According to the article, she was crying as if her heart would break as she was handed to her grief-stricken parents.

Growing up in rural St. Helena, Rose learned the value of hard work from an early age. She spent hours in the hot sun picking prunes and grapes on the family ranch, and for neighbors. She received $.05 for a 50 lb. box of prunes. Rose continued cutting grapes each harvest, well into her sixties!

She graduated from St. Helena High School in 1941. While in school she excelled in sports, playing volleyball, basketball, softball and running hurdles. As an adult, she was the catcher on a women's softball team that played at the Veteran's Home in Yountville.

Rose married Doyle Taylor August 30, 1941, and together they raised nine children. They were both active in Sons of Italy and the Rutherford 4-H Club. Rose was also a very active member of the Italian Catholic Federation, St. Helena Catholic Church and Altar Society. Through 4-H, she taught many of the local girls how to sew and cook. Rose was frequently requested to judge cooking and sewing at the Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Lake County Fairs. Over the years, Rose spent many hours alongside her good friend, Angelica Colombo, cooking dinners for various community organizations in St. Helena. Some of the groups were St. Joan of Arc, Son's of Italy, and St. Helena High School Jazz Band's fundraisers. Rose and Angelica considered 100 people to be a small dinner!

Rose's family will always have fond memories of gathering at her home on Inglewood Avenue for every holiday event---she loved a full house! Parties always included some form of entertainment and Rose was always ready to dress in costume, sing her favorite songs and play games. She enjoyed casinos and was uncannily lucky at the slot machines---and she could play a ruthless game of Crazy 8's!

An avid fan of the Giants, 49ers, and Warriors---Rose rarely missing a televised game, while at the same time embroidering a pillowcase or crocheting a blanket. She was thrilled to finally see a Giants' game in person at PacBell Park.

Rose was the oldest of 5 children. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis & Josephine Edano, her brother John, husband Doyle Taylor and two grandchildren. She is survived by many relatives including 3 sisters: Mary Edano, Anita Brownell, Louise Switzer; 9 children: Cindy Hays, Ray Taylor, Linda Collins, John Taylor, Sandra Stansberry, Barbara Delzell, Karen Smarker, Pam Pollastrini, Gaye Cardoza; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited on October 25th at the St. Helena Catholic church at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on October 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Helena Catholic Church. Masks required. A reception at the Parish Life Center will follow the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made in her memory to the Sons of Italy Scholarship Fund, 1322 Inglewood Ave, St. Helena, CA.
