Verna was born on a very cold January 12th evening in Hibbing, Minnesota. Verna, wanting to get a head start in life was born early. She was so small that her parents, Ed and Pearl Kauppinen brought her home in a shoe box. At least, that is what her parents told her. Verna and her parents moved to California to work in the shipyards during the War. Settling in Berkeley, Verna, graduated from Berkeley High School and attended St. Mary’s College. While in High School Verna met her one and only true love, Tom. a sailor at the time, on a blind date and she knew then that was the man she was going to marry. They would have been married 62 years this month.
While Tom attended college, Verna worked as a secretary in Berkeley and San Jose. They moved to Napa in 1963 where Tom taught school and Verna worked as a substitute secretary. Verna co-owned and operated the restaurant, Dari-Delite on Silverado Trail with her good friends, Carol and Roy Stein. She also owned and operated Yergi’s Yummys, a sandwich shop on Highway 29.
Verna loved dancing, bowling, camping, cruising, and driving across the U.S. She couldn’t wait to get into the car to meet that new adventure around the comer.
Verna loved people and people couldn’t help loving her. She was especially proud of her serving as an Ombudsman for 17 years. After a long battle with her health, She passed away with her husband, Tom and her two children, Linda and Ken by her side.
