Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army’s triumph over the French on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican Army was greatly outnumbered, so the victory provided an important symbolic boost for the Mexican government and the resistance.
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is not a huge holiday and mostly observed in the State of Puebla, considered the country’s gastronomic capital. In the United States, the day has become an occasion to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.
At the Napa Farmers Market, we celebrate and honor the long participation of Mi Fiesta, a vendor at the market for more than 20 years. Silvia Infante’s Mi Fiesta booth has fresh hand-made tamales, pre-packaged enchiladas and chiles rellenos, salsa, guacamole, tortillas and salsa — in other words, everything you need for your Cinco de Mayo festivities.
Pick up eggs, tortilla chips, salsa and perky, freshly harvested cilantro at the Napa Farmers Market and celebrate Cinco de Mayo with chilaquiles for Saturday lunch. Or make the dish for Sunday brunch to keep the celebration going all weekend. Buy some fresh navel oranges for dessert or add a salad of farmers market greens, sliced radishes and oranges.
Enjoy this traditional Mexican breakfast on Cinco de Mayo and all year long.
