The Canadian government has recognized Napa Valley with a Geographical Indication (GI) designation for wine sold in Canada, Napa Valley Vintners announced.
The GI designation will help protect the Napa name from being used illegitimately in Canada, which generally ranks first in export sales for Napa Valley wines.
“Napa Valley is the U.S. leader in proactively protecting its name and brand integrity around the globe,” Linda Reiff, NVV executive director, said. “With this landmark recognition, we are the first American wine or spirit product or region to receive GI status in Canada.”
