Anyone planning to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a drink or two may want to find a designated driver.

The Avoid the 9 Napa County DUI Task Force will be out in force on Wednesday patrolling for drunken drivers in Napa, American Canyon, St. Helena and Calistoga.

On St. Patrick’s Day 2008, an estimated 37 percent of drivers and motorcyclists involved in the fatal crashes had a blood alcohol content of .08 or above, according to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That day saw 134 fatal car accidents in the United States.

“Whether you are meeting a few friends at the local pub after work or you have other plans and you plan on using alcohol, never drive while impaired and never let your friends drive if you think they are impaired,” Napa Police Chief Rich Melton said. “Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk.”/Register
